한국 언론의 자살 보도에 관한 코퍼스 언어학적 분석 : 신문과 텔레비전 방송을 중심으로

이 연구는 ≪조선일보≫, ≪중앙일보≫, ≪동아일보≫ 등 국내 3대 중앙 일간지와 KBS, MBC, SBS 등 3대 지상파 방송을 대상으로 2006년 1월 1일부터 12월 31일까지 1년간 보도된 153건의 자살 관련 신문 기사와 136건의 자살 관련 방송 기사로부터 5만 4,777 단어의 코퍼스(corpus)를 구축해 코퍼스 언어학(corpus linguistics)적 분석 방법을 통해 국내 언론의 자살 보도 실태를 실증적으로 분석했다. 분석 결과 국내 언론의 자살 관련 기사의 제목에 자살이라는 어휘가 자주 사용되는 것으로 나타났으며 ‘투신’, ‘동반자살’, ‘한강’ 등과 같이 자살 장소나 방법과 관련된 어휘가 핵심어로 자주 사용되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 자살이라는 어휘를 기사의 제목에 자주 사용하거나 자살 장소 혹은 방법 등을 상세히 언급하는 어휘를 핵심어로 사용할 경우 후속 자살 유발 등 일반 수용자들에게 미치는 영향이 클 수 있다는 점에서 기존의 자살 보도와 관련한 언어적 표현 방식을 지양하기 위한 노력이 필요하다고 하겠다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the suicide news by Korean newspapers and television networks from corpus linguistic point of view. To this end, this study built a large corpus of 54,777 words from 153 suicide related articles of three major Korean newspapers-Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo and Dong-a Ilbo-and 136 suicide related news of three major Korean television networks-KBS, MBC and SBS-from January to December 2006. This study shows new aspects of language use in suicide reports by Korean newspapers and television networks. Findings of this study reveal that major Korean newspapers and television networks frequently use suicide method or place related words in headlines such as 'mass suicide' 'family suicide' or 'Han River' as well as the word suicide itself.
