Abstract
This study intends to find the historical meaning of Cafe space and the specific way of living as cafe waitress in colonial Korea. Cafe, which was widely prevailed in 1930s, presents the functional relation between pleasure space and female sexuality as one indicator of colonial modernity. Under the operation of capitalistic business system, the cafe which made use of the female sexual attraction was regarded as a site for the decadent urban culture and potential prostitution. Meanwhile, the cafe waitress in colonial Korea who were composed of various family status and educational background tried to gain the right of modern career woman and to enjoy free love, seeking for a sportive instinct in Cafe. These diverse images of the waitresses are discovered in newspapers, magazines, and novels published in colonial period including the magazine for and by the waitresses, ꡔYeoseongꡕin 1934. The culture of cafe and waitress in colonial Korea, which was introduced from Japanese Taisho Age, shows the process how the traditional way of pleasure and amusement in Korea were being transformed into the modern one through the intervention of the colonist, Japan, while presenting the location of woman in urban consumption culture and questioning the modern construction of woman in colonial Korea.
