외모차별사회의 성형 경험과 의향

이 연구는 여성은 가꾸는 존재라는 고정관념과 외모차별 풍토가 한국 여대생들의 성형 경험과 의향에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 서울과 수도권 대학의 여대생 479명을 대상으로 한 설문조사 결과는 다음과 같다: 1) 여성의 몸은 자본화 될 수 있다는 ‘인식’과 외모차별적 ‘경험’은 성형 경험이나 의향이 있는 여성들 사이에서 더 높게 나타난다. 가꿈에 대한 사회적 통념에 동조하는 경향 역시 성형 의향을 가진 여성들에게서 더 높게 나타난다. 2) 외모 가꾸기를 조장하는 기제들 중, 성형 경험과 의향을 가장 잘 설명하는 것은 외모차별 경험이다. 반면, 수려한 외모는 여성들의 삶의 질을 좌우할 수 있는 자원이라는 인식 자체나 가꿈은 여성들의 본능이자 의무라는 고정관념은 다른 변수들을 통제한 상황에서는 종속변수에 영향을 미치지 않는다. 외모 때문에 놀림의 대상이 되거나 이성교제에서 불유쾌한 체험을 한 여성들일수록 성형 의향과 경험을 갖게 된다는 연구결과는 성형 행위가 외모차별적 사회에서 더 이상 피해를 당하지 않으려는 자구책임을 시사한다. 한편 외모지향성과 같은 심리적 특성이나 외모 이외의 대안자원 여부도 성형 경험과 의향을 좌우하고 있다. 이런 결과는 가부장적 사회문화나 체계가 여성들의 외모 변형에 가하는 압력뿐만 아니라, 여성 집단 내의 차이에 주목한 분석들이 더 활성화 될 필요성을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effects of looks-discriminatory social atmosphere and the sex-stereotype, which decorating one's own body is every women's instinct, on college women's cosmetic surgery. The survey of 479 reveals that those who have experiences or intention of the surgery are more likely to perceive women's body as a physical capital or actually experience looks-discrimination. Women who have the intention are also more likely to agree to the sex-stereotype about women's decoration. In final regression analysis, only looks-discriminatory experience remains influential to the dependent variables, while the stereotype does not. The finding suggests that the looks-discriminatory social atmosphere contributes to the intention and practice of cosmetic surgery.
