본 연구에서는 3세 아동과 어머니 105쌍을 대상으로 학령전기 아동의 공감, 어머니의 심리통제와 아동의 만족지연의 관계를 살펴보았다. 공감은 그림을 사용한 이야기로 측정하였고, 어머니의 심리통제는 어머니의 보고를 통해 측정하였고, 만족지연은 만족지연 과제에서 나타난 지연시간으로 측정하였다. 그 결과, 공감은 만족지연과 유의한 정적 상관을 보였고, 어머니의 심리통제와 유의한 부적 상관을 보였다. 즉, 아동이 공감수준이 높을수록 만족지연을 잘 하였으나, 어머니의 심리통제를 많이 받을수록 만족지연을 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 위계적 회귀분석에서 아동의 가정환경을 통제하였을 때에도 공감과 어머니의 심리통제는 각각 만족지연을 유의하게 예측하였다.
Abstract
This study investigated the relations among preschool children’s empathy, maternal psychological control and children’s delay of gratification. One hundred five 3-year-old children and their mothers were tested. Empathy was measured by a picture-story technique in which children identify the emotion of the protagonist verbally and non-verbally. Mothers were asked to fill in a questionnaire measuring their parenting styles including psychological control, behavioral control and support. Children’s delay of gratification was assessed by a task of delay of gratification in terms of time of delay. The results were as follows. First, children’s empathy displayed a significant positive correlation with delay of gratification. Second, maternal psychological control displayed a significant negative correlation with delay of gratification. Third, the hierarchical regression analyses indicated that both the level of children’s empathy and maternal psychological control predicted children’s delay of gratification once the level of maternal education was controlled, but children’s empathy had more predictive power than maternal psychological control. This result suggested that children’s internal variable such as empathy had more impact to children’s delay of gratification than did external variable such as maternal psychological control.
