Abstract

This paper explores the Filipino marriage-migrant women's transnational practices from below, their diverse settlement strategies, and the implications of these practices and strategies. In the mainstream discourses in Korea, Filipino marriage-migrant women have been assumed as ‘immigrants’ who lose their relationships with their native country and simply assimilate into the host country. Unlike this popular idea, however, these women as trans-migrants negotiate their belongings with the both countries, rather than taking the host country as the sole frame of reference of life. Filipino marriage-migrant women maintain close relationships with their native country by continuous exchanges through transnational networks. They plan transnational projects and perform them in the long-term life perspectives. These practices which are performed by the Filipino marriage-migrant women enlarge their options for survival, selectively using the resources provided by Korea and the Philippines. The practices signify the life strategies that the non-elite migrant women develop while resisting the top-down assimilating forces. These new ways of belongings show us the post-national world where the conflicts between the governing strategies of the nation-states and the survival strategies of the trans-migrants lead to inconsistencies and dissonances regarding the belongings of the migrants. These also raise a question towards the current integration policies on the marriage-immigrants by the Korean government.
