Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyse the pattern of how to use mobile phone in public from the point of the social norm. The mobile norm as a kind of social norm is continually redefined and varied in social context. not fixed at all. In addition, new technologies have kept introducing new forms of media etiquette. So the research investigated the profile mobile norm that has been developed in recent years. This study divided mobile norm into three categories such as subjective phone norm, phone norm in five spaces(classroom, movie theater, restaurant, transportation, road) and phone norm in functions(calling use vs. silent use). Data were collected from a total of 300 smart phone users of university students. Overall, the results indicated strong correlations of mobile norm with phone usage in public places. The lower level of mobile norm the students had, the more they used mobile phone. Respondents have the highest level of mobile norm in movie theater but they used frequently use phone in restaurant or transportations. The college students didn't use a phone call without inevitable purpose in public space. But the subjective phone norm was not related to phone usage in public. The self-control as a personality variable was strongly correlated with phone usage in public, so that the stronger the self-control of the users was, the less they used phone in public.
