Abstract

Elderly care in the aging society becomes one of the critical issues in women's lives. Multiple roles due to increasing labor participation and changing family structure have brought burdens and conflicts among the women who care for elderly parents. However, few studies has not been done to analyze which factors influence the burdens of elderly care, focusing on similarities and differences of the caring experiences by working women and housewives. The present study is to explore caregiving burdens and role conflicts by women's work status and provide social counter-measurements. Data were gathered from survey questionnaire of 283 women whose husband work at the City and District Government in Seoul and who care for 65+ aged parents. Statistical method on SAS 6.12 was used to reveal related factors of eldercare burden and role conflict among women. Three analyses were done: the first for all women, the second for working women, and the last for housewives. Results show that caregiving burdens among women are affected by their health conditions, number of the old, daily care hours, perception of economic constrains, amount of primary caregiving responsibility, emotional conflict with the elderly parent, responsive attitude of the old on caregiving, elderly-care related familism. Work-related factors make significant contributions to the eldercare burdens of women. In particular, work-role conflicts for working women and average hours of caregiving work for housewives are determinant variables in the analysis. Gender- sensitive policies and programs are suggested, along with the socialization of caring work.
