Abstract
The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of middle-aged adults’ dispositional self-focused attention, catastrophization and rumination on their hypochondriacal tendencies. For this research, a survey on dispositional self-focused attention, catastrophization, rumination and hypochondrial tendencies were administered to 550 adults aged from 40 to 60, residing in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Gyeongnam Province. 460 valid sets of questionnaire were selected and statistically analyzed through frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, stepwise multiple regression analysis, simple regression analysis, Pearson’s correlation analysis, and hierarchial regression analysis using SPSS Win 21 Program. The results were as follows: Firstly, by the gender of middle-aged adults, there was a significant difference in treatment experiences, health habits and hypochondriacal beliefs. Secondly, the influence on midlife’s hypochondriacal tendencies varied by subscale. It was found that catastrophization and dispositional self-focused attention had influence on disease phobia, effects of symptoms, worry about illness and bodily preoccupations, and catastrophization had influence on treatment experiences, hypochondriacal beliefs and thanatophobia. Also, rumination had influence on health habits as well as on effects of symptoms and worry about illness. Lastly, catastrophization was found to have partial mediating effect concerning the influence of middle-aged adults’ dispositional self-focused attention on their hypochondriacal tendencies.
