Abstract
This study examines the differences in visual production techniques for OTT and movies over time (from 2016 to 2022). Based on the limited capacity model of motivated mediated message processing theory, this research attributes the differences in visual production techniques to the screen size of OTT and movies. Focusing on three visual production techniques, (1) shot angle, (2) shot length/density, and (3) shot movement, this study analyzed 96 clips (2 media x 8 contents x 3 different analysis units x 2 production periods) totaling 192 minutes (96 clips x 2 minutes each) produced in years 2016 – 2017 and 2021 – 2022 for OTT and theater movies. First, regarding shot angle, OTT contents used more shots in closer range such as close up and bust shot and less full shots than movies. Also, more recent OTT contents produced in 2021-2022 used more farther shots such as full shots than movies. Second, regarding shot length/density, OTT contents showed shorter shot length and higher shot density than movies. Also, more recent contents produced in 2021-2022 showed shorter shot length. Third, regarding shot movement, OTT contents used more fix shots than movies. Also, more recent contents produced in 2021-2022 showed an increase in shot movement. These results could be interpreted in terms of changes in production techniques due to screen size.
