이 글은 21세기 지구화를 통해 급속히 발전하는 여행 산업을 중심으로 베트남 공예와 하노이 공예 축제를 여성주의 입장에서 살펴본 것이다. 베트남은 1986년 도이모이 개방정책이후로 급속도로 경제성장을 하고 있는 나라이다. 신자유주의 물결을 타고 베트남의 현재 전통 예술, 공예에 대한 관심이 국가적이라고 할 수 있는데 신자유주의 산업으로서 관광산업의 비중이 커지고 있기 때문이다. 공예는 아시아 여성과 깊은 관련을 지니는데 공예는 집이라는 작업 환경 특성으로 여성들이 많이 참여 할 수밖에 없는 분야이고 이데올로기 대립으로 근대화가 더딘 아시아에서는 공예가 아직 일상의 축으로 아시아 여성의 일상을 이해할 수 있는 분야이다. 베트남은 아시아 중에서도 가장 공예가 발달되어 있는 나라이다. 베트남에는 공예 마을(Craft Village)이라고 불리는 전통 공예 마을이 2,017개에 달할 만큼 베트남 생활의 큰 축을 이루고 있다. 전지구화 시대 국제 여행 산업의 부상과 더불어 베트남 정부는 외국 관광객을 유치하기 위한 문화 관광(culture tourism)으로서의 공예에 큰 관심을 쏟고 있고 각 도시마다 대규모의 공예페스티벌을 벌이고 있는데 이 논문은 ‘하노이 공예 축제2010(Hanoi Craftweek 2010)’를 통해 신자유주의 시대 하노이 도시 재현의 전략과 공예산업에서의 여성의 위상을 살펴본다.
Abstract
This paper looks at Vietnamese craft and women in the whirl of 21th century globalization which encourages the rapid growth of transnational tourism. The demand of locality is ever increasing with the increase of global tourism and thus there increases a public interest in traditional craft as a local art. Vietnam still maintains the traditional industry of craft due to its 20th century history of socialization preventing the country’s rapid industrialization. Currently, there exist as many as 2017 Craft Villages in Veitnam. Many cities like Hanoi, Hochimin City, and Hoe newly organize craft festival to draw the global tourist. Vietnam once known as a war bittered country now transforms into a country of traditional local art, crafts and a place of cultural tourism. As it is in its image, craft is heavily dependent on the women workers whose population reaches 70% at least in total. However, in reality the industry has strong patriarchal system based on the traditional sexual division of work. This paper looks at the strategy of representation of Hanoi through Hanoi craft festival, and gender inequality in craft industry.
