Abstract

This article explores the process of identity construction as a feminist activist of Muslim women in Malaysia which is related with the participation of feminist movement. They have belief that Muslim patriarchy suppresses women and gives women unfair treatment, so they are involving in fighting against it for women’s justice and gender equality. Research participants formed feminism-friendly identity during childhood. Conflicts with parents and (religious) teachers formed their latent and manifest perception about women suppression and gender unequality. Awakening feminist consciousness was made through the conveyance of social movement―Dakwah movement―experience from parents, sudden experience of foreign culture, experience of gender suppression, participation in women movement organization. In the step of awakening feminist consciousness, the identities of participants were constructed so as to enhance the congruence with identity of feminist movement group but not enough to ensure participation and activities. The most important thing for the identity construction as a feminist activist is to merge feminist consciousness with understanding of Allah through feminist interpretation about Quran. Joining in the reformative muslim group takes decisive role in conducting that. Alternative interpretation strengthens Muslim identity, stronger belief gives Muslin feminists the power for fighting against gender unequality. Feminist interpretation for Quran empowers research participants and works as stronger base for feminist activities than prevailing interpretation. In the process of combining feminist consciousness with new interpretation of Allah, identity transformation appeared through various and multiple process of identity construction.
