Abstract

The purposes of this study are to examine the influence of stress on depression, and to verify the mediating effect of resilience and the moderating effect of social support between stress and depression in the elderly. The moderated mediating effect of resilience through social support was also tested. The participants of this study were 398 elderly people who were 60 years old and over in Gyeongbuk rural ares. Participants completed stress, resilience, social support, and depression questionnaires. The data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and SPSS Macro. The obtained results were as follows: First, there was significant influence of stress on depression. Second, the mediating role of resilience between stress and depression was verified. Third, the moderating role of social support between stress and depression was also confirmed. Lastly, the moderating effect of social support on the relationship between resilience and depression(the moderated mediating effects) was statistically significant, but the moderating effect of social support on the relationship between stress and resilience was not significant. These results suggest that there are buffering effects of resilience and social support on the relationship between stress and depression, and high level of social support can compensate lack of resilience to stress. The implications and limitations of this study and the direction of future research were discussed.
