Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on journalism practices. The researcher investigates whether journalists have altered their main news sources and whether the types of news coverage and reporting challenges vary by type of news media. Furthermore, the study explores the relationship between news sources used during the pandemic and the journalistic principles pursued. First, the analysis revealed that journalists perceive a decline in their overall reporting behavior, with reporters indicating that they rely less on first-hand reporting, social media coverage, other media news, and citizen tips in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic than they did prior to the outbreak. Second, the researcher examined the reporting challenges faced by different types of media organizations due to the pandemic. The findings indicated that reporters from online media organizations reported the most difficulties in field reporting due to the pandemic and perceived the greatest lack of space for reporting and writing. Third, the analysis suggests that journalists who rely on interviews, professional reports or data, and citizen tips are more likely to produce accurate reporting on social issues, propose social solutions, and represent marginalized groups. In contrast, the heavy reliance on press releases and other media coverage had a negative impact on pursuing journalistic principles. The study's results, which analyzed how journalists' news production practices have changed during the pandemic, have significant implications for how journalists can enhance the quality of news in future pandemic situations.
