Abstract
Memoir as non-representational literature delivers ‘the real’ that often triggers socio-political impacts. However, memoirs' recent linkage to the global publishing industry and popular culture has lead to changes in their features and effects. With the growing influence of the global lecture industry, such as TED, the stories and narratives of those invited to the memoir publication industry have become more diverse and have often expanded to global media platforms. Within this trend, Western readers perceive ‘distant others’ in particular and their sufferings in memoirs as ‘the real’ in an unknown place while maintaining a lack of ethical obligation. This research investigates the socio-cultural context of memoirs by victims and the features of their narratives, using the case of North Korean women’s memoirs. In-depth interview data with Lee Hyeonseo, one of the memoir writers, is used to facilitate the analysis of the memoirs. This paper analyzes how the global culture industry and publishing industry work together, what emotions and affects those memoirs deliver to readers, and how colonized and gendered gazes intervene in the memoirs via the hands of ghostwriters. Interestingly enough, North Korean women manifest agency by actively engaging with reflectivity, although it is limited by the colonial gaze and commercial interests of the industry.
