본 연구는 가정폭력의 신체적, 성적, 정서적 폭력과는 구분되는 경제적 폭력의 범주에 대해 가정폭력피해여성의 경험을 중심으로 논의하기 위한 것이다. 가정폭력피해자 보호시설을 통해 경제적 폭력 경험이 있고, 자발적으로 연구에 참여하고자 하는 의사를 가진 20명의 가정폭력피해여성을 연구참여자로 선정하였다. 심층인터뷰를 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 자료분석을 위해 가정폭력피해여성의 경제적 폭력 경험에 관한 해외 선행 연구의 성과를 토대로 고용방해, 경제적 제한, 경제적 착취를 중심으로 분석틀을 구성하여 활용하였다. 연구결과 경제적 폭력 범주의 하위범주를 발견하였다. 고용방해는 업무방해 및 일을 못하게 함, 경제적 제한은 가족 자원에 대한 접근권, 관리권, 사용권 제한, 경제적 착취는 피해자의 자원을 갈취하고 탕진함, 일하지 않음, 빚짐, 강요된 빚, 강요된 노동의 하위범주를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 경제적 폭력에 대한 국내 경험연구가 부재하는 가운데 가정폭력피해여성의 경험을 통해 다양한 경제적 폭력 사례의 예시를 제공함으로써 해당 분야에 대한 이해를 증진하고, 경제적 폭력 문제 해결을 위한 기초자료를 제공하였다는 의의가 있다. 가정폭력피해여성의 경제적 폭력 피해 경험에 대해 다른 유형의 가족폭력, 가부장적 가족 및 성별화되고 분절된 노동시장의 맥락을 고려하여 심층적으로 분석하는 후속 연구가 필요하다.
Abstract
The objective of this article is to establish distinct categories and subcategories of economic abuse based on the firsthand accounts of women who have been subjected to domestic violence. Twenty women who sought refuge in shelters for victims of abuse, reported instances of economic abuse from their abusers, and expressed their willingness to engage in the research were invited as research participants. The data was collected through individual in-depth interviews. This research establishes an analytical framework that focuses on employment sabotage, economic restriction, and economic exploitation, and identifies the subgroups within each of these categories. Coerced debt and coerced labor are significant subcategories of economic exploitation. This article contributes to the field of domestic violence research by presenting diverse cases of economic abuse experienced by victims of domestic violence. It enhances the understanding of these experiences and provides foundational knowledge for policy implementation. It suggests that additional research be needed to analyze battered women’s experiences of economic abuse in the context of other types of domestic violence, the patriarchal family, and gendered labor market.
