Abstract

This study analyzes the Japanese language acquisition among working-class women in colonial Korea, focusing on the representations of cafe waitresses and “omoni” (Korean domestic workers in Japanese households) in Gyeongseong during the 1930s and 1940s. Through a textual analysis of newspaper articles and literary works, it investigates the ideologies and practices of their Japanese language use and its broader sociocultural implications. The findings reveal that cafe waitresses strategically employed Japanese to construct a sophisticated feminine image that embodied the modernity associated with Japan and Japanese society. Omonis’ engagement with the Japanese language facilitated their exposure to new domestic lifestyles and enabled them to leverage their positions for better working conditions. The study demonstrates that Japanese language acquisition and use among working-class women functioned not merely as a means of communication but as part of the broader sociocultural practice that challenged traditional gender norms and contributed to the expansion of capitalistic consumer culture in colonial Korea.
