Abstract

The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of a group program using Imagery Rescripting (IR) for reduction of depressive symptoms. The development of a IR program was based on Arntz and Weertman's IR three-phase model. To investigate effects, we measured the degree of depression and intrusive memory using the CES-D and Intrusive Memory Scale; we also measured self-esteem, self-compassion, and self-discrepancies. Self-esteem and self-compassion, the protective factors and treatment-maintenance factors for depression, were measured by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Self-Compassion Scale. For Self-Discrepancies, Self-Questionnaire Scale was used. The IR program was used in an experimental group (n=15) with a control group (n=15) for comparison. The IR program was significantly effective in reducing depression, self-esteem improvement and self-discrepancies decrease. There were no significant changes in intrusive memory and self-compassion. Four weeks later, reduced depression and self-esteem enhancement remained effective. This study confirmed that the IR program resulted in reducing depression, as well as changing self-concept variables such as self-esteem and self-discrepancies, which might not improve even after long-term treatment. This is the first study of the IR effects for a group intervention.
