Abstract
This research discusses the possibility of expanding the boundary of consciousness through interrelation between mindfulness-based treatments and psychoanalytic treatment. First of all, the paper examines historical origins and theoretical basis of mindfulness and psychoanalytic theories. It attempts to organize the definition of “Sati”, “sampajanna,” “Ego,” and the Unconscious. We then explore the “evenly suspended attention” as a shared factor in both the investigation of the mindfulness and the psychotherapeutic process. This paper also aims to deeply explore how to understand the concepts such as “being mindful of the attention” and "impediment" emphasized in the meditative processes from which mindfulness originates, and the psychoanalytic concepts of “free association,” “evenly suspended attention,” and “resistance,” and how these concepts may complement one another in a psychotherapeutic process. We then examined how the Buddhist idea of “Galae,” which serves as the theoretical basis of mindfulness, could be understood in parallel with the psychoanalytic view of ‘libido’ and ‘narcissism.’ Lastly, the paper discusses the points of overlap and the potentiality of these therapeutic concepts to compensate one another. Overall, our investigation aims to add towards the wisdom regarding finding the ultimate state of happiness for human being through the two major strands of leading ideas regarding the mind.
