Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the transition skills for students with disabilities during the transition from elementary to general middle schools. The questionnaire was developed for this study by the researchers to find out the importance of each transition skill and each area of the sub-categories of the transition skills. 176 general teachers from 102 nationwide general middle schools with special classrooms responded to the items of the survey. As to the survey responses, factor analysis was used to see the types of transition skills and ANOVA was employed for further data analysis. The results of this study were as follows: (1) the types of transition skills revealed 5 sub-categories including 'self-care skill', 'self-management skill', 'study skill', 'social skill', and 'basic academic skill'; (2) in 5 sub-categories of the transition skills, the area of 'self-management skill' was the highest score; the areas of 'self-care skill', 'basic academic skill', 'social skill' followed that, and the area of 'study skill' was the lowest score; and (3) there were statistically significant differences in accordance with teacher's career length variable. Based on this study, a transition program could be be developed to support students with disabilities during the transition from elementary to middle school. Suggestions for future research and for various policy-related supports for implementing more substantial transiton programs were provided. Finally, some suggestions for the development of quality secondary inclusive education were also discussed.
