Abstract

[Purpose] This study aimed to examine overall research trends in intervention studies targeting individuals with borderline intellectual functioning (including slow learners) in Korea and to evaluate their quality using the CEC (Quality Indicators for Evidence-Based Practices) framework. Specifically, it analyzed qualitative characteristics of interventions in educational and socio-emotional domains and suggested directions for future research. [Methods] A total of 37 intervention studies published between 2000 and 2025 were analyzed. Studies were classified into single-subject and quasi-experimental designs and evaluated using eight CEC quality indicators. Each indicator was rated on a 0–2 scale, and inter-rater reliability was confirmed. [Results] Among group-design studies, single-group pretest–posttest designs were most common, while multiple-baseline designs across participants were predominant in single-subject research. Cognitive and learning interventions were the most frequent independent variables, and social–emotional outcomes were the most common dependent variables. Most studies focused on elementary school students, with limited research on adolescents and adults. CEC analysis showed that quasi-experimental studies generally met criteria for intervention and participant descriptions but showed weaknesses in fidelity and context. Single-subject studies demonstrated particularly low scores in interventionist-related criteria. [Conclusion] Intervention research on individuals with borderline intellectual functioning in Korea has largely focused on elementary students and socio-emotional domains. The CEC evaluation highlighted insufficient reporting of intervention fidelity and interventionist information, suggesting the need for stronger implementation verification and expanded life-span and integrative intervention research.
