Abstract
This study examined how paternal depressive symptoms and family relationship quality were associated with preschoolers’ problem behaviors. Furthermore, this study aimed to examine the mediating role of family relationship between factors. Parents of three hundred and five preschoolers completed measures of depressive symptoms, family relationship, and their child’s problem behaviors. Correlation and regression analyses indicated that paternal depressive symptoms were associated with lower family relationship quality and more child behavior problems. The results also revealed that the relationship between paternal depressive symptoms and child behavior problems is partially mediated through family relationship quality. These results highlight the important role of paternal depressive symptoms in explaining child behavior problems and suggest consideration of family relationships as a target in intervention and counseling.
