Abstract
It is largely unexplored whether the regional characteristics affect households’ consumption of insurance and, if so, what aspects of the regional characteristics influence it. This paper is to examine the impact of regional characteristics in which households are nested on households’ consumption of insurance, using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study 10~15th data and multi-level analysis. Specifically, the effects of four regional factors were studied while controlling for effects of household features: the recent change in unemployment rate, the share of regular employees, the apartment price, and the financial planner-population ratio. The analysis shows that the greater increase in unemployment rate or the lower share of regular employees in a region leads households to decrease the consumption of insurance, by increasing households’ expectation on unemployment and labor income uncertainty in the future. In addition, the higher apartment price in a region leads households to increase the consumption of insurance. However, the financial planner-population ratio has no effect on households’ decision to consume insurance.
