Abstract
This study aimed to systematically review and quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) interventions for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) through meta-analysis. Following the PRISMA guidelines, single-subject design studies published in international journals between January 2015 and May 2024 were screened, and a total of seven studies were included in the analysis. Visual data were digitized using GetData Graph Digitizer 2.26, and effect sizes were calculated with the Tau-U method. The results demonstrated that AR-based interventions showed very high effectiveness in improving emotion recognition and social interaction, whereas VR-based interventions yielded moderate effects, particularly in enhancing social understanding. Moreover, short-term, single-target interventions and those applied to children under the age of 10 were associated with higher effect sizes. These findings indicate that AR/VR-based interventions can have substantial effects on improving social communication skills and reducing problem behaviors in children and adolescents with ASD. The study also highlights the importance of incorporating age-specific designs and systematically planned maintenance sessions to achieve optimal long-term outcomes.
