Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the family support needs for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to gender, school level, and severity of disability. The participants of the study were 240 parents of students with ASD selected using a volunteer sampling in elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide. The data on the family support needs for students with ASD were collected through an electronic questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and two independent samples t-tests, and ANOVA were implemented for analyzing the data. The results of the study were as follows. First, there was no gender difference of the family support needs for students with ASD. Second, there were significant differences of the family support needs according to the school level of students with ASD. The family support needs of elementary school students were significantly higher than those of middle school students in the areas of independence support, information support, social/institutional support, and disability awareness support. In addition, the family support needs of high school students were significantly higher than those of middle school students in the areas of leisure support and rest support. Third, there were significant differences of the family support needs according to the severity of disability of students with ASD. The family support needs of students with severe disability were significantly higher than those of students with mild disability in the areas of education support, leisure support, emotional support, rest support, and social/institutional support. In addition, the family support needs of students with severe disability were significantly higher than those of students with moderate disability in the areas of independence support, care support, and sibling support. On the basis of the study results, implications for family support policy and program as well as suggestions for future studies were discussed.
