Abstract
This study aimed to examine the association between risk perception on the COVID-19 pandemic and worry among mothers with young children as well as to investigate the mediating roles of intolerance of uncertainty and loneliness in the association. For this purpose, mothers of one hundred and seventy-four infants and preschoolers who were attending childcare centers in Seoul, Korea responded to a survey and the collected data were analyzed using correlation, regression, and bootstrapping methods. The primary results are as follows: First, COVID-19 risk perception, intolerance of uncertainty, and loneliness were significantly and positively associated with worry. COVID-19 risk perception was significantly and positively associated with intolerance of uncertainty and loneliness. Second, the results showed that COVID-19 risk perception had significant effects on worry, and the link could be fully mediated by intolerance of uncertainty and loneliness, even when adjusting for age and marital status. The findings highlight the importance of psychological characteristics including intolerance of uncertainty and loneliness in understanding emotion of mothers with young children in the pandemic. Furthermore, the results suggest the benefits of intervention and counseling programs utilizing the psychological mechanism to alleviate worry among mothers with young children during unexpected circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
