Abstract
What is theology? The recent fall of the western theological tradition has caused many to rethink the very nature of theology as well as its methodologies. This article is a small attempt to rethink ‘theology’ in our time, while staying within the guidelines of the Christian tradition and taking its root firmly in the Biblical texts. In this respect, 2 Peter 1:1-11 offers some interesting suggestions:Theology, the ‘knowledge of God’ as the result of knowing God and Jesus the Christ, must involve ‘partaking in the divine nature/character’as its goal or result. Why does the author of 2 Peter (the Apostle Peter,I believe with the growing consensus) take ‘partaking in the divine character’ so seriously as to define theology? The major challenge which Peter faced was, to my judgement which is supported by that of many recent scholars(contra Käsemann), the Epicurean thoughts which exercised the very secular, hedonistic, immoral influences upon the churches at his time. The false prophets outside the churches and the false teachers inside, these opponents denied or/and neglected the Lord’s parousia and the coming final judgement, encouraged immoral and unlawful lifestyles, boldly challenged the authority of the Apostles, and eventually plotted to disunite the churches into pieces. How should the churches overcome these challenges? The core of the strategies brought forth by 2 Peter is found in ‘knowing God, the Christ’(1:4)especially in terms of ‘partaking in the divine characters’(1:5-7). By doing this, the knowers of God/the Christ as partakers in the divine character can stay ‘in the light’ which safely leads them to their final salvation(1:9-11). Later, Peter exposes the fundamental flaws of the hermeneutics of the false teachers: They falsely claim to be the light to the Scripture which, according to Peter, is the eschatological Light that one can not understand the text without. Thus, to know God means to partake in the divine character, which will be crucial to one’s final salvation. Again, according to 2 Peter, even the hermeneutics of the Scripture must affect with one’s divine character, and theology as knowledge can never be separated from the very person who he is in terms of the divine character.
