요한복음 연구에서 전통적으로 예수의 죽음은 그의 대표적인 속죄 사역으로이해되어 왔다. 그러나 이러한 일치된 관점은 불트만 이래로 부인되어 왔다. 이들은 요한복음에서 예수의 죽음은 속죄가 아니라 계시를 위한 것으로 묘사되었다고 한다. 예수는 죄를 용서하기 위해 죽으신 것이 아니라, 하나님의사랑을 계시하기 위해 죽으셨다고 한다. 그러나 본 연구는 다음과 같은 두가지 이유에서, 요한복음은 예수의 죽음을 계시보다는 속죄의 관점으로 기술한다고 주장한다. 첫째, ‘세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양’(1:29)으로서의 예수의 모습은 요한복음이 그를 속죄를 위한 유월절 어린 양으로 묘사하고 있다는 것을 나타낸다. 이는 구약에 나오는 유월절 어린 양의 모습을 포괄적이면서도독창적으로 발전시킨 요한복음식 유월절 양의 모습이다. 둘째, 5개의 ὑπέρ 구문(6:51; 10:11, 15; 11:50-52; 15:13; 17:19)은 예수의 죽음이 사람들의 죄를위한 속죄의 죽음과 직/간접적으로 연결되어 있음을 보여준다. 본문들이 명시적으로 속죄를 언급하지는 않지만, 본문이 나타내는 예수의 제의적, 희생적 죽음은 1:29과 자연스럽게 연결될 수 있다. 그러므로 이상과 같은 이유에서 요한복음에서 예수의 죽음은 사람들의죄를 용서하기 위한 속죄의 사역으로 해석되어야 한다고 본다.
Abstract
Traditionally Jesus’ death in the Fourth Gospel had been regarded as his atoning work for his followers. However, this consensus has been broken since Bultmann suggested that Jesus died on the cross for God’s revelation. This study argues that Jesus’ death should be understood as atonement for the following two reasons: First, the Johannine picture of the Lamb of God(1:29) functions as the atoning sacrifice. The author of the Fourth Gospel presents Jesus as a new Passover victim which makes atonement for the people. Secondly, the five ὑπέρ formulae(6:51; 10:11, 15; 11:50-52; 15:13; 17:19) show that Jesus’ death in the Fourth Gospel is directly or indirectly related to his atoning ministry. Although these texts do not refer to Jesus’ atonement clearly, his cultic or sacrificial death in these texts can be related to the description of Jesus’ death in 1:29. For these reasons, Jesus’ death in the Fourth Gospel should be interpreted as his atoning task for his church.
