Abstract

In recent scholarship of the Minor Prophets, a trend has been formed to view the Minor Prophets as being a unity rather than an anthology of several writings. In other words, since the early 1990s, it has been suggested that the Minor Prophets were arranged to constitute a unity with one another by means of catchwords, common motifs, common themes, and so on. This suggestion seems to gain more support from a structural coherence in the arrangement of the Minor Prophets in the Massoretic tradition. With the assumption that the Minor Prophets were canonically shaped into a unified book as a whole, this work has attempted an exegetical study of the beginning and ending units of the Minor Prophets. The last literary unit of the book of Hosea is thematically parallel with the last unit of the book of Malachi. What is noteworthy in this regard is that the healing motif is present at the two units, thus forming inclusio. The theological meaning of the healing motif has been explored with the result that the healing theme in the book of Hosea points to God’s work that enables his people to grow like a tree and to bear fruits of justice, loyalty and righteousness. To our surprise, this point is also found in the healing motif in the last unit of the book of Malachi where theinjunction of returning to God occurs at the beginning, as is the case with the last unit of the book of Hosea. The healing motif of the book of Malachi entails that the light of righteousness serves the function of forgiving and healing God’s people in the eschaton, so that they may become ones who bear the fruit of righteousness. This concern with forgiveness through healing and fruits of justice and righteousness is also present in the middle of the Minor Prophets, namely the book of Micah. This phenomenon lends more credence to the notion that the final shape of the Minor Prophets was intended to show the unity of the 12 prophetic books. Also, from this emphasis on the healing and fruits-bearing at important junctures in the Minor Prophets, it follows that the Minor prophets have its chief eschatological focus in the hope that God’s people will bear frutis of righteousness through God’s righteous work.
