Abstract

This paper proceeds from the theological conviction that the systematic- theological and apologetical understanding of preaching is an essential ingredient in order for the preachers today to fulfill their duties. That is, preaching is to deal with special revelation, revelation testifies Christ, and the Holy Spirit makes possible the communication of revelation. From the so-called “form-and-content” point of view the content of preaching should be determined by the cross of Christ (1 Cor. 2:2) and the form dictated by the communication of the Spirit (2:10-16). This emphasis, though needless to emphasize it, is very important and essential because it may free the preachers at last from the wrongly-shared “preaching culture.”Preaching from the outset was an ineffective method according to the wisdom of the world. Thus, Paul stated it to be “foolish” (1:21) and a displeasing stone that stumbles the audiences (1:23). The function of preaching, despite the unappreciating reality, stems from the apologetical function that revelation assumes regarding Christ. Revelation testifies Christ against the fallen mankind and it was never easy regardless of the generation. The role of preachers in the sense that it is also to testify Christ is subject to the function of revelation and way of its communication. This paper first undertakes to decipher the difference within reformed tradition whether revelation has apologetical function. For that, Kuyper’s Amsterdam school will be, within the scope of discussion, compared with Old Princeton headed by Warfield, and we will hear from the Westminster school represented by Van Til. The apologetical function of special revelation, we conclude, has Christological purpose and outlook which is in harmony with Westminster Confession of Faith. The next step is to demonstrate that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is necessary for the communication of revelation based on 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:16. Our conclusion is reached through the, though limited, exegetical reflection of the passage in view. Lastly, the paper upon the conviction that Practical Theology should stem out of Systematic Theology makes some practical suggestions based on the discussion thus far. This may be equivalent to the “application” part in homiletic structure. It is no doubt a foolish and unappreciated method from the worldly wisdom point of view, but only the preaching so focused on Christ and solely depending on the Holy Spirit for communication will, we conclude, set free the preachers and audiences alike from the wrongly-shared preaching culture.
