Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of an interpersonal-etiquette–focused Skillstreaming program on the community adaptation and social skills of adolescents with developmental disabilities. The participants were an experimental group of 12 (intellectual disability: 7; autism spectrum disorder: 5) and a control group of 8 (intellectual disability: 4; autism spectrum disorder: 3; one student eligible for special education services). After administering a parent checklist to the parents of the experimental group, skills with the highest needs and priority for acquisition were selected, and a 10-session program linked to the achievement standards of the Career and Vocational subject was developed and implemented with the experimental group; the control group received a group communication program to enhance social skills. Program effects were assessed using the Community Integration Skills Assessment-2 (CISA-2) and the Social Skills Rating Scale I (K-SSRS). A Mann–Whitney U test was used for homogeneity testing, and pre–post differences were analyzed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results showed a statistically significant improvement only in the Interpersonal Etiquette domain of CISA-2 in the experimental group, while no significant changes were observed in other domains in either group. On the K-SSRS, neither group exhibited statistically significant changes in the domains of assertion, cooperation, empathy, or self-control. The discussion addressed the need to operate small, tailored groups and implement long-term, structured instruction; to strengthen generalization strategies across classroom–after-school–community settings in connection with curriculum achievement standards; to revise CISA-2 items to reflect changes in the digital environment and align with age composition; and to develop a self-report social skills scale suitable for adolescents with developmental disabilities.
