Abstract
This study examined the effects of a function-based visual task choice intervention on noncompliant behavior and its maintenance in school-aged children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Two 10-year-old children diagnosed with ASD participated in a single-subject study combining a multiple baseline design across participants and an ABAB reversal design within participants. Functional analysis indicated that the noncompliant behavior was primarily maintained by escape function, and the visual task choice intervention was applied accordingly. As a result, all participants consistently showed reductions in noncompliant behavior, and repeated behavioral changes were observed during withdrawal and reimplementation phases, demonstrating a functional relation between the intervention and behavior. Furthermore, the reduction in noncompliant behavior was maintained at follow-up, and visual analysis with Tau-U statistical methods confirmed the significance of the intervention effects. These findings empirically support that function-based, individualized visual task choice interventions are effective in reducing escape-maintained noncompliance in children with ASD and that the effects can be sustained over time, providing valuable evidence for intervention design and practice.
