Abstract
This study explored the theological symbolism contained in Brahms’s “German Requiem”. By analyzing his Requiem movements 2 and 6 first, this study was able to see the historical multi-layered nature of early music, which expressed the cross of Christ, from the Middle Ages to Bach. In this works, the symmetrical structure of the seven movements, with the chiasmus, the tonal Trinity symbolism and the cross figure, which are known as primary theological symbols in Bach’s works, were observed. Brahms’s own musical and theological expression was also discovered, such as a C-H-E-motive for implying Christ in a cryptography and the narrative of the cross. Through detailed examination of the score, it was demonstrated that the reversal drama of the crucifixion and resurrection was implied in the motive transformation as Brahms’s unique ‘developing variation’ technique. This interpretation is based on Werckmeister’s theological speculative view that the seventh partial tone among harmonic overtones corresponds to dissonance, which could be linked with the secret of the cross. In conclusion, this study exemplified that the transformation of the cross motive in the sixth movement was already planned in the second movement and this motivic variation technique of Brahms could be seen as Luther’s Christocentric notion of biblical interpretation.
