Abstract

There are two major explanations for the sexual violence depicted in Judges 19. The first is that the initiation of the sexual violence in Judges 19 was the woman’s inappropriate behavior. The unique use of “על זנה” (to commit fornication) allowed the beginning of the story to be understood and interpreted as starting from the woman’s immoral behavior. Second, in the midst of religious and moral chaos, the custom of hospitality collapsed, and cruel sexual assault occurred in such a situation. These studies focus on the specific context (moral and social depravity) of Judges 19, where the sexual assault occurred, rather than the sexual assault itself. In previous studies, the fact that women are concubines and negative prejudices about women led to the interpretation of women who were victims of sexual assault as unfortunate events in which a worthy woman was treated appropriately. However, in this study, Judges 19 describes the cycle (tension-violence-reconciliation) of domestic violence as a poor woman who suffered domestic violence when there was no king in Israel. This woman is not a simple concubine but a second wife with legal status, and Levite’ domestic violence made her go to her father’s house. The domestic violence of the Levites continues repeatedly. The Levite’s home was not a place of safety for the woman but a place of violence, where she had no choice but to take risks and leave. The woman returned to her father’s house, but her father did not fulfill his duties as a father. So, her father’s house also became another place of violence. The place of hospitality at Gibeah, where she entered while returning to her husband’s house, was by no means a place of safety for the woman. There, the husband gave up the woman’s safety for his safety, and in the end, the woman was miserably gang-raped and died. All of this shows the actions of men who did what was right in their own eyes during the period of the Judges and who did not serve God as kings.
