Abstract
This paper deals with the comparative study on the dramatic narrative and structure of Seungmu and Jung-gwajang. Seung-mu is a regional court dance form which has been enacted in the gyobang(regional institute for the teaching of court dancers and musicians) of Jinju in the present Gyongsang province located at the south-east zone of Korea. According to Gyogang-gayo(1872) which depicted the performance structure and style of various court dance forms performed in Jinju gyobang, Seungmu was a dramatic dance form which describes the conflict between a Buddhist monk and hanryang(gallant) to take the mind of a littile courtesan called sogi. In Seungmu, the Buddhist monk seduces the girl but is finally defeated by hanryang. In the meanwhile, the Buddhist monk sequence in Korean mask play(tal-chum) assumes similar plot as Seungmu though its dramatic narrative is varied according to region. It is found that the dramatic structure of Korean mask play of middle zone is most similar as that of Seungmu in spite that Seungmu belongs to south-east zone of Korea. Thus, it can be preassumed that Seungmu had been accepted from middle zone through the mediating role of court dancers of Jinju gyobang who was selected to participate in the court events of royal palace located in the middle zone of Korea. Besides, it can be induced from the comparative analysis that the Buddhist monk sequence of mask play of middle zone gave much influence in the formation of Seungmu. Thus, this study has a significance in that it proposes the possibility of the cultural ascent from folk dance to court dance, which reflects the flexibility in the cultural intercourse in the later period of Joseon dynasty in the later part of the 19th century A.D.
