Abstract

This study examined the status of North Korea performing arts and the characteristics of ‘Arirang’, the unique North Korea mass game that attracted people's attention due to President Roh Moo-hyun's visit to North Korea in 2007 and its inclusion in the Guinness Book. North Korea dance is characterized by its utilization as a medium that visually delivers the North Korean government's policies and directions to communist party members, laborers, and the public.‘Arirang’ is a new style of mass game that has combined with performing art. The mass game that dates back to a flower mass game in the 1930s when Koreans fought actively against Japanese rule, is a large scale performing art that has combined ideology and art. It is composed of gymnastics, dance, and rhythmic movements. It is an art that helps adolescents to develop artistic ability and to act collectively, systematically and orderly.In this regard, it is necessary to divide North Korea dance into the part which can not be acceptable by South Korea and the part which can be acceptable. The former includes ideology North Korean express and the latter contains dance movements and technological parts such as stage setting devices and lights.In order to discuss the ways to overcome cultural differences between North and South Korea and to increase cultural exchanges between the two Koreas, systematic approaches should be made to North Korean cultural art.
