본 연구는 한국 체육(학)계에서 사용되는 체육 및 스포츠 관련 용어의 정의가 안고 있는 언어적 혼란함, 정치적 무력함을 구체적으로 파악하고, 그 실상을 국내외의 언어 소통 방식에 견주어 살피는 과정을 바탕으로 삼아 논리적 정합성, 현실적 타당성을 담보할 수 있는 대안을 모색함으로써 체육 및 스포츠 관련 용어의 정의에 대한 재정립하고자 하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 스포츠란 제도화된 규칙에 따라 승패를 겨루는 경쟁적 활동으로서, 승패를 겨룸에 있어 활발한 신체발현과 고도의 신체기량이 요구되며, 즐거움이나 재미 같은 내재적 이유뿐만 아니라 건강, 스트레스 해소, 생계 유지 등과 같은 외재적인 이유도 그 참가동기가 될 수 있는 인간의 활동이다. 체육이란 ‘신체의 움직임을 매개로 하여 어떤 목적을 위해 가르치는 자와 배우자 사이에 존재하는 관계’로 정의한다. 즉 체육은 동물의 한 종인 ‘사람’의 ‘몸’을 만물의 영장인 ‘인간’의 ‘신체’로 만들어 가는 과정이며 이는 가르치는 자와 배우는 자 사이의 관계 속에서 이루어지는 교육이다. 경기는 경기 운동 또는 운동 경기의 줄임말로 넓은 의미에서 스포츠와 같이 개인이나 단체가 정해진 규칙에 따라 능력을 겨루는 경쟁 활동 전반을 지칭한다. 이때 경쟁에서는 다양한 방법으로 승부를 결정하게 되며 그 방식은 제도화 과정을 반영한 방식이 일반적이다. 운동은 인간의 심적, 물적, 상태 또는 기능을 향상시키고자 하는 인간 활동이다. 기능의 향상, 체력의 발달, 긴장의 이완, 건강의 증진, 기술의 발달, 친교의 확대, 성취의 경험 등은 운동 참가의 동기가 된다. 무예는 무술, 무도 등과 혼용되고 있으나, 신체적 측면이 강조되는 무술과 정신적 측면이 강조되는 무도의 용례를 절충하면서 신체적 측면과 정신적 측면을 병립시키기에 유리한 단어라고 할 수 있다.

Abstract

This study has attempted to reestablish the definition of terms related to sports and physical education by examining (theoretical) linguistic confusion and political incompetence of these terms used in the academic world of Korea's physical education, and grope for an alternative plan which guarantees logical propriety and realistic validity based on the examination of methods of communication inside and outside of the country. The content of this study are 1) drawing out instances of definition of terms related to sports and physical education and problems within these instances, 2) examination of existing definitions of these terms, 3) analysis of general usage of Korean and general communication of foreign language within existing definition of these terms, 4) suggestion of alternate definition which can expand possibility of communication, and clarify terms related to physical education as well as sports. Moreover, through the following procedures, defining sports, physical education, exercise, game, and martial arts was attempted: First, we recognized that what we have to define through this study (sports, physical education, exercise, game, and martial arts) are designation (that is, expressed by language) of each words; Second, instances capable of expressed by language in our ordinary language were collected; Third, any resemblance (family resemblance according to Wittgenstein) present in these collected instances were grasped; Fourth, a definition was given by putting together resemblances (rules or common aspects present in language expression) grasped from collected instances.
