재즈댄스가 무엇인가라는 간단한 질문에 우리는 한 마디로 대답을 못하거나 혹은 너무 많은 설명을 하여야 한다. 즉 재즈댄스가 무엇인가에 대한 명확한 규정 즉 정의가 없는 것이다. 이러한 재즈댄스 정의의 부재로 인해 재즈댄스는 현재 정확하게 이해되거나 설명되지 못하고 있다. 현대무용과 같은 기존의 순수무용의 장르와의 구분도 명확하지 못할 뿐 아니라, 새롭게 등장하는 힙합(hip-hop), 방송 댄스 등과 같은 장르들과도 혼돈스럽다. 더욱이 대학의 무용, 체육, 뮤지컬 관련 학과들에서 재즈댄스를 교과목으로 개설하고 있음에도 불구하고 이에 대한 명확한 정의 없이 실기 위주의 수업만이 진행되고 있다는 것은 학문의 정체성과 확립에 상당히 위험한 일일 것이다. 이에 이 연구는 재즈댄스의 보다 명확한 정의의 필요를 느껴 외국에서 출간된 전문서적과 논문 그리고 전문 잡지에서 이야기하는 재즈댄스의 설명을 토대로 재즈댄스 정의를 찾고자 한다. 이것은 학문적 기반이나 이론적 기틀이 부족한 재즈댄스의 구분을 명확히 하는 계기가 될 것이며, 이를 토대로 다양한 재즈댄스의 이론적 연구가 시도될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 또한 대학을 비롯한 재즈댄스 전문 교육기관에서 재즈댄스의 정의가 유용한 자료로 쓰일 것으로 예상된다.
Abstract
To a simple question asking what jazz dance is, we usually provide too much explanation or do not even give clear answers. In other words, there is no clear definition of jazz dance. Due to the absence of a definition of jazz dance, currently it is not accurately understood or explained. Moreover, its division from the existing pure dance like modern dance is not clear, and it can be even confused with genres like hip-hop dance and broadcasting dance newly appeared. Though jazz dance is open as a regular class in departments related to dance, physical education and musical, it only provides classes focusing on practice without any definite definition, which is pretty dangerous to establish an identity of the study. Owing to the necessity of clearer definition of jazz dance, this study aims to find the most suitable definition of jazz dance by collecting definitions of jazz dance mentioned by specialized magazines, theses and specialty publication published overseas. It will be an opportunity to definitize the division of jazz dance which is lack of academic basis or theoretical frames, and also considered to have various theoretical studies on jazz dance based on it. It is also expected that the definition of jazz dance will become useful data to educational institutes specialized in jazz dance including colleges.
