Abstract
This study examines the potential of playfulness and agonistic (competitive) characteristics inherent in dance, based on Johan Huizinga’s theory as presented in Homo Ludens. The findings of the research are as follows are: First, the concept of play is closely linked to the origin and essential characteristics of dance. As Huizinga suggests in Homo Ludens, play is marked by spontaneity, formality (rules), non-ordinariness, and fictionality—features that align with the fundamental nature of dance. Second, dance has historically embodied agonistic qualities across both Eastern and Western traditions. From ancient ritual dances to court dances and theatrical performances, expressions of competition, confrontation, and technical superiority have consistently played a significant role in dance. Third, Contact Improvisation, a genre of contemporary dance, involves physical interaction between dancers and can be interpreted as incorporating a degree of some competitive tension. In the realm of popular dance, forms such as B-boying and DanceSport have established themselves as prominent examples of agonistic dance, illustrating how dance can simultaneously embrace competitiveness and creativity. Fourth, the inclusion of agonistic elements as a mode of expression in dance—without necessarily promoting the sportification of dance—offers opportunities to enhance both technical refinement and expressive complexity. In conclusion, integrating agonistic characteristics into dance can serve not only as a driving force for the creation of new genres but also as a critical point of departure for exploring the future directions of dance studies. Continued academic inquiry and theoretical development in this area are essential for deepening our to deepen understanding of contemporary dance and for elevating to elevate the social and cultural status of the art form.
