본 연구는 미국 워싱턴에 있는 홀로코스트기념관의 교육프로그램의 특징에 대한 연구이다. 나치에 의해 홀로코스트가 자행된 지 70년의 세월이 지났음에도 불구하고 홀로코스트는 과거의 지나간 역사가 아니라 현재도 자행되고 있는 살아있는 역사이다. 본 연구에서는 세계 역사에 거대한 파문을 일으킨 홀로코스트의 발생배경을 알아보고 홀로코스트 기념관에서 실시하고 있는 전시와 교육의 특징과 시사점을 탐색하였다. 본 연구 결과를 살펴보면, 홀로코스트 기념관은 과거의 역사적 사건에 대해 도전적이고 성찰적으로 이해하고 탐색할 수 있는 교육의 장의 역할을 수행하면서, 교육적인 사명인 제노사이드의 위험성을 경고하고 방관자적 태도를 비판하며 아동들에게 시민의식을 고취하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기념관의 교육방법으로 깊이 있고 정확한 역사 인식과 통합교육 그리고 아동수준에 맞는 교육방법에 대해 고찰하였다. 또한, 홀로코스트 기념관의 전시가 유발하는 역사왜곡에 대한 문제와 비판적 관람태도의 중요성에 대해 논의하였다.
Abstract
This study examines the characteristics of the educational program provided for children by the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC in the United States. It examines the backdrop of and events leading to the Holocaust-which caused horrific repercussions in world history-and the characteristics of the educational programs and exhibits of the Holocaust Memorial Museum as well as their implications. The Holocaust Memorial Museum has been fulfilling its role as an institute of education, providing the opportunity to reflectively examine and understand the historic events of the past. The museum warns of the dangers of genocide and criticizes an indifferent and passive attitude, instilling global citizenship in children. The study examines the museum's education technique of providing a deep and accurate historic perspective using methods that are at a suitable level for the children. In addition, the study also discusses the problems of history distortion caused by the Holocaust Memorial Museum's exhibitions and the importance of a critical viewing of museum exhibits.
