품성에서 지성으로: 덕윤리에 대한 듀이의 자연주의적 해석

이 논문의 목적은 덕윤리가 가진 장점은 살려내면서도 그것의 난점은 해결할 수 있는 실마리를 찾아보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 덕윤리를 듀이의 실용주의적 자연주의의 관점에서 조명할 것이다. 듀이는 덕윤리와 유사하게 품성이나 습관과 같은 도덕적 개념들을 중요하게 다루면서도 도덕판단이 요구되는 상황에서 판단 혹은 명령의 규범성 문제를 소홀히 하지 않기 때문이다. 듀이에 따르면, 도덕이 불가피하게 상황과 얽혀있기 때문에 도덕판단의 절대적 확실성은 보증할 수 없지만, 지성을 통해 어느 정도 객관적인 판단에 이를 수 있다. 도덕적 상황에서의 지성적 탐구를 듀이는 숙고라고 부른다. 듀이가 말하는 숙고는 실험과 관찰을 통한 과학적인 방식으로 진행되기 때문에 객관성을 보증한다. 이때 객관성의 준거가 되는 것은 유기체로서 인간의 자연적 조건이다. 다시 말해서 인간의 자연적 삶의 조건을 훼손하지 않아야 한다는 규범적 요구가 무엇보다 우선한다. 이러한 규범적 요구를 바탕으로 지성적 탐구가 이루어질 때, 더 나은 판단의 가능성이 열린다. 따라서 본 논문에서 필자는 덕윤리의 문제를 해소하면서도 규범윤리학으로 회귀하지 않는 길은 ‘지성의 윤리학’이라고 주장할 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find clues that highlight the advantages of virtue ethics and solve its problems. For this purpose, the study examined virtue ethics from the perspective of Dewey's pragmatic naturalism since he did not neglect the normativity issues in judgment or order in a situation requiring a moral judgment while placing importance on moral concepts such as character and habit in a similar way to virtue ethics. According to Dewey, morality is inevitably connected to a situation, which makes it difficult to ensure the absolute certainty of a moral judgment. He argued that one is able to reach an objective judgment to some degree through intelligence. He called an intelligent inquiry in a moral situation as deliberation. Since deliberation happens in a scientific way through experimentation and observation, it guarantees objectivity. Here, the natural conditions of human beings as organisms become the criteria of objectivity. In other words, a normative request where the conditions of natural human life are not damaged should come first before anything else.
