이 논문은 교회와 문화의 관계에 대한 팀 켈러의 모형이 어떻게 발전해 왔는지를 고찰하고 있다. 그 시작점은 리처드 니버의 '그리스도와 문화'였다. 니버는 다섯 가지 유형을 제시하는 유형론적인 접근을 시도했 다. 하지만 니버의 모형은 구분유형 접근법을 시도했으나 각 유형들이 상호배타적이지 않은 문제가 있었다. 카슨은 니버와는 달리 개혁신학의 입장에서 신학적 균형을 취하고자 하였으며, 종합모형 개발의 필요성을 제 안하였다. 켈러는 카슨을 따라 개혁신학의 입장에 기초하여 교회와 문화의 관계 모형을 발전시켰다. 특히 켈러는 니버가 시도했던 구분유형 접근 법의 취지를 잘 이해하여 각 유형들이 상호배타적인 구분유형 모형을 고안하는데 성공하였고, 또한 카슨이 추구하고자 했던 종합모형의 제시에 도 성공하였다.
Abstract
This paper examines how Tim Keller’s model of church-culture relations has evolved. The starting point was Richard Niebuhr’s Christ and Culture. Niebuhr attempted a typological approach which suggests five types. But Niebuhr’s approach had a problem that the types were not mutually exclusive. Carson, unlike Niebhur, tried to achieve a theological balance from the perspective of reformed theology and suggested the need for a comprehensive model development. Keller followed Carson to develop a model of church-culture relations based on reformed theology. In particular, Keller understood the purpose of typological approach attempted by Niebuhr well and succeeded in designing a model of typology in which each type was mutually exclusive. He also succeeded in presenting a comprehensive model Carson intended to pursue.
