해방 이전 한국 장로교 목사들의 종말론

해방 이전의 한국 장로교회는 하나의 교단이었고, 하나의 공인된 신학교인 평양 장로회신학교를 가지고 있었다. 평양 장로회신학교는 1901년에 개교하여 1939년에 무기한 휴교하기까지 800명 이상의 한국인 목회자후보생들과 교회 지도자들을 배출했다. 신학교는 네 개의 장로교선교가협력하여 운영했고, 교수들도 주로 선교사 교수들이었다. 따라서 한국 목회자들은 선교사 교수들의 신학과 신앙을 그대로 배우고 전수받을 수밖에 없었다. 본고에서는 특별히 해방 이전 한국 장로교 목사들의 종말론을논구해 보고자 하는데, 먼저는 그들에게 영향을 미친 선교사 교수들의 종말론에 대해서 간략하게 검토하였는데(II), 그들 대부분은 세대주의 전천년설을 정설로 믿고 가르쳤다. 이어지는 III에서는 초대 한국교회에 막대한 영향을 미친 길선주 목사의 종말론을 검토해 보았고, IV에서는 신사 참배 반대 운동에 앞장섰던 주기 철 목사, 손양원 목사, 주남선 목사 등의 종말론을 확인해 보았다. 길선주와 달리 후자에 속한 목회자들은 종말론에관련된 저술을 남기지 않았기 때문에, 설교나 심문 조서를 참고할 수밖에없었다. 마지막 V 절에서는 초기 박형룡 박사와 초기 박윤선 박사의 종말론을 논구해 보았다. 그들의 후기 입장이 역사적 전천년설이었던 것에 비하여, 초기의 종말론적인 언급은 극소수였을 뿐만 아니라 어떤 종말론을택하고 있는지를 정확하게 규명하기가 어려웠다. 우리는 이러한 논구 과정을 통하여 선교사 교수들의 종말론이 그러하였듯이, 그들에게 배운 한국인 목회자들 대다수 역시도 세대주의 전천년설을 따라갔음을 확인할 수가 있었다. 사실 세대주의 전천년설은 장로교나 개혁교회 신학과 부합하지 않은데도 불구하고, 선교사 교수들의 영향으로 초기 한국 장로교회는 그러한 입장을 선택할 수밖에 없었다. 어쩌면달리 다른 선택의 폭이 없었을 것이다. 하지만 세대주의 전천년설에 따라임박한 종말론을 강조하게 되므로 선교와 전도사역에 열정을 낼 수가 있었다거나 일제의 강압에 굴하지 아니하고 신앙을 지켜낼 수 있었다는 점을 외면할 수는 없다. 그런데도 세대주의 전천년설은 칼빈주의와 양립할수 없는 신학 체계이므로, 현재 장로교회나 개혁교회는 세대주의 전천년설에 대하여 바른 종말론 교육을 해야 한다고 생각된다.
Abstract
Before the liberation from Japanese occupation, the Korean Presbyterian Church was only one denomination and had an accredited seminary, Pyengyang Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Pyengyang Presbyterian Theological Seminary which is opened in 1901 and closed indefinitely in 1939, produced more than 800 Korean pastor candidates and church leaders. The seminary was administered in cooperation with four Presbyterian missions, and the professors were mainly missionary professors. Therefore, Korean pastors had no choice but to learn and receive the theological lectures and faith discipline of missionary professors. In this paper, I would like to examine the eschatology of Korean Presbyterian pastors before liberation. First, I briefly reviewed the eschatology of missionary professors that influenced Korean pastors(section II), and most of them believed and taught Dispensational premillennialism. In the following section III, I examined the eschatology of Pastor Seonju Gil, who had a great influence on the early Korean churches, and in section IV, I examined the eschatology of Pastors Ki Cheol Joo, Yangwon Son, and Namseon Joo, who took the lead in the movement against shrine worship. Unlike Seonju Gil, the pastors belonging to the latter did not leave any writings related to eschatology, so we had no choice but to refer to sermons or interrogation records. In the last section V, I examined the eschatology of early Dr. Hyung Nong Park and Yune Park. Compared to their late premillennialism, there were only a few early eschatological references, and it was difficult to pinpoint which eschatology they followed. From this examination, we can conclude that the majority of Korean pastors who learned from Missionary professors also followed the Dispensational premillennialism, just as the missionary professors’ eschatology is the same. Although the Dispensational premillennialism did not correspond with Presbyterian or Reformed theology, the influence of missionary professors forced the early Korean Presbyterian churches to choose such a position. Maybe there were no other options to choose to them. However, by emphasizing the impending eschatology according to the Dispensational premillennialism, it cannot be overlooked that they were able to exert passion for missions and evangelism and that they were able to preserve their faith without surrendering to the Japanese imperial force. Nevertheless, since Dispensational premillennialism is a theological system that is incompatible with Calvinism, the current Presbyterian churches and Reformed churches must provide correct eschatological education for Dispensational premillennialism.
