Abstract
This article is an attempt to analyze and criticize the theistic evolutionism by Henry Beacher, one of the well-known preachers among 19th century American progressivists, revealed in his Evolution and Religion (1885), from the Reformed perspective. First of all, his progressivism has been brought under scrutiny with three subjects: antidogmatic tendency, the love of God, and Beecher’s relationship with evolutionary thought at his time. Also his doctrine of God has been found to be differentiated from its Calvinistic understanding as the God of Beecher is identical to the God of progress or evolution recognized in human conscience and experience. According to Beecher, not only goodness, one of the attributes of God, is drawn into a soteriological universalism, but his will and his decree are considrered by the paradigms of progress and evolution. Before analysis and critique on the theistic evolutionism advocated by Beecher, Darwin’s evolutionism has briefly been brought into consideration with the two ideas of agnosticism and design by William Paley because Beecher has been considerably influenced by Darwin. Based on this analsis, it is possible to evaluate and criticized his thought, which is an attempt to harmonize Darwin’s evolutionism with Christian doctrine as it is revealed in his claim to declare Scripture of creation as a wonderful monument for the truth of evolution. Lastly, fully convinced with his theistic evolutionism, Beecher reinteprets five traditional doctrines (Scripture, providence, human sin, Jesus Christ, and salvation) with his own understanding. This article tried to provide a Reformed critique on Beecher’s argument by utilizing the thought of Herman Bavinck. In conclusion, Beecher’s theistic evolutionism is a new and unique attempt to harmonize the traditional Christian doctrine with Darwin’s evolutionism. However, it is a deviant attempt seen from the perspective of Reformed theology since it fails to to truly and rightly grasp and appreciate uniqueness and anthenticity inherent in traditional understanding of creation portrayed in Scripture.
