1970년대는 본격적인 산업화를 표방한 국가주도의 개발주의 시대였으며 근대적 삶의 양식이 계층과 지역에 의해 다양하게 분화해 나가는 속도와 변화의 양상이 숨가쁘게 전개되던 시기였다. 이 시기의 소설문학 가운데 윤흥길의 장마, 황석영의 객지와 조세희의 〈난장이가 쏘아 올린 작은 공〉은 1970년대 한국사회의 두 가지 과제, 산업사회 속에서의 인간 삶의 의미와 분단이 빚어낸 가족사의 비극이 세대를 관통하여 지속적으로 문제적 상황과 인물을 만들어 내고 있다는 점으로 인하여 일찍부터 많은 이들의 눈길을 끌었다. 〈난장이가 쏘아 올린 작은 공〉은 그 가운데 산업사회와 연관되는 파편화된 삶의 양태를 미시적 시선에서 그려내는 수작으로 소외계층의 삶에 대한 동화적 상상력과 짧게 끊어지는 가쁜 문체적 특징으로 인해 이 시기를 대표하는 작품으로 꼽히고 있다. 〈난장이가 쏘아 올린 작은 공〉이 보여주는 연작형 구성은 파편화된 세계상의 서술적 재현의 한 가지 가능성 혹은 실험성의 예가 될 수 있을 것이다. 1970년대의 연작형 소설과 ‘중편소설’이라는 소설 유형을 텍스트의 길이나 서사의 완결성 측면에서만 다루고자 했을 때 부딪히는 소설미학 차원에서의 불구성 혹은 불완전성의 난점은 서술주체의 진술태도와 서사행정의 연계 속에서 해소될 수 있을 것인바, 이는 〈난장이가 쏘아 올린 작은 공〉이 한 서사주체의 일관된 視點을 굳이 따르려 하지 않는 데서도 확인할 수 있다. 그것은 이 텍스트들이 우리들의 삶이 실제로는 삶의 단편들을 짧게 시공간의 특정 부면에 투영시키는 그림자 효과에 의해 그려낼 수 있을 정도로 단순하지 않다는 점에 대한 깨달음일 수도 있을 것이며, 동시에 소설화할 수 있는 심정적-물리적 거리를 최소한으로 좁혀낼 수 있는 최대치가 이 텍스트들처럼 겨우 시간의 혼재와 공간의 중첩 정도일 뿐 결코 완벽한 서사공간의 재구성은 불가능하다는 소설미학적 문제의식의 일단을 보여주는 것일 수도 있기 때문이다.
Abstract
In Korea, the 1970s was the era of industrialization. This period of industrialization in South Korea conducted by the various aspects of modern life forms had the experience. This time, the Korean Modern Literature is facing two kinds of literal issues. One is the humanity in modernization and another is the unification of divided nation. Cho Se-hee's <Nanjang-i ga sso-a ollin jak-eun gong(The Ball Shot By A Midget)> dealt with the relation with humanity and industrialization in Korean 1970s. A brother and sister threesome, focused as narrator and the narrative subject of statement, are main charater. They state that the past stories of their family and the present situation which thsy were issued a demolition by Official Goverment of Nak-won('nak-won' means 'paradise' in Koren. This naming makes the ironical mood because this brother and sister threesome's family are too poor and compensation money supplied bt the Goverment is too small, so they can not pay the sundrymiscellaneous expenses to be a residents of the apartment.) in this short story. The focus of the narrative qualified these statements are oriented to a different world tells us. Through such an narrative statement structure, The writer expose that these three children could not find the hope that they are able to make happy family and their father, midget will be happy. It is better revealed through a unsual narrative structure which similar title and same character make different story but the main subject is same. This narrative structure minimize the reader's psychological distance of characters of stories because the situations and conflicts of stories are similar to reader's so they can feel sympathy for characters.
