Abstract

As an interest in ‘sharing’ increased in Korea, entering the 2010s, various experiments for shared culture are conducted in private sectors as well as local governments. This study deals with the issue of ‘shared kitchen’ as one of the commons. This study would first attempt to classify the types of the domestic shared kitchens and reveal the characteristics of each type. In particular, this study focused on investigating the relationship between the type of shared kitchen and personal composition (subjects of participation and operation), the method of operation, its cultural value and social meaning as commons produced in the process. As a result of the study, the type of the domestic shared kitchen could be classified into four types: ‘village-type’ that functions as a space of residents’ community activities, ‘stronghold-type,’ which is a community of common interests, values and tastes, ‘startup-type’ that aims to start up in the dimension of the sharing economy and ‘one-person household-type’ that attempt to solve the sense of isolation and expand relationships. It was noted that the members of the shared kitchens innovated our lifestyles, creating various cooperative structures based on the social capital constructed through making relationships. In this sense, it can be summarized that the shared kitchen is a model of the possibility that can respond to the harmful consequences of the neo-liberalist and super-individualist society, that is, ‘a cooperative shared society.’
