Abstract
This study investigates small and medium enterprises’hereafter “SME”) behavior levied alternative minimum tax(hereafter “AMT”) for research and development investment (hereafter “R&D”) by testing:(1) whether SMEs levied AMT intensify R&D investment, (2) whether SMEs levied AMT choose capitalized R&D investment to defer the burden of taxable income and (3) whether SMEs paying taxes more than AMT change their accounting choice from capitalized R&D to expensed R&D. Results indicate that SMEs intensify total R&D investment to manage tax burden as we expected. Moreover, their accounting choice is to expand capitalized R&D which can defer the recognition of amortization expenses to the future period. However, when tax burden is increased, their accounting choice is also changed to the expansion of expensed R&D, which implies that they reduce taxable income of current period in order to smooth inter-period tax burden. Our study contribute to the literature by empirically testing the incentives of accounting treatment for R&D linked with explicit tax cost. Also, findings suggest more explicit evidence that managers try to balance tax and non-tax trade off by showing that R&D investment by accounting treatment can be discriminately used to manage explicit tax costs.
