Abstract
Objectives: To assess the correlation of body composition with serum lipid profile and bone mineral density(BMD) in Korean women. Methods: Between August 2005 and March 2006, we retrospectively reviewed 190 women who did not take any drugs affecting lipid or bone metabolism. The women were classified into 5 groups according to age and menopausal state. We analyzed the relationship between body composition and serum lipid profile and BMD; differences were determined by ANOVA test, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression. Results: Body composition(i.e., BMI, fat mass, and lean body mass), BMD, and lipid profile were significantly different among the five groups. Based on multiple linear regression, age was a predictor of spine and femur neck BMD(P<0.001). Conclusion: Different levels of BMI and fat mass index with age can affect serum lipid levels. Lean body mass rather than fat mass can exert an effect on BMD. Therefore, we speculate that increased physical activity may have a positive effect in preventing osteoporosis and cardiovascular events by lowering body fat and increasing lean body mass.
