본 연구는 한국전쟁기 국민방위군의 후신으로 창설된 예비군단인 제5군단의 기간요원을 양성하기 위해 군단과 함께 창설되었던 육군예비사관학교의 편성과 운용의 역사적 실체를 조명하여 전쟁 당시의 혼란 중에도 장교를 확보하고자 했던 잊혀진 노력의 발굴을 시도한 것이다. 예비사관학교의 역할이 두드러진 것은 한국전쟁의 한 변곡점인 제5군단을 모체로 하여 창설된 한국노무단(Korean Service Corps, KSC), 일명 노무부대의 기간 장교로서 미군을 중심으로 한 UN군의 ‘축차진지상에서의 방어작전 반복’이라는 현 휴전선 일대에서의 고지전 및 참호전을 성공적으로 지원한 중역이라는 역사적 지점이다. 미 제8군의 심장부에 잔존한 KSC의 계보적 뿌리이자 역사의 사각지대에 이들 육군예비사관학교와 예비역 장교들이 있었다.
Abstract
This study traces the history of the Army Reserve Officer Academy, which was founded in May 1951 during the Korean War and disbanded in October of the same year, in the category of ‘micro-historical military history’. This Academy was established simultaneously with the 5th Corps (reserve), which was established following the disbandment of the National Defense Corps. The Reserve Officer Academy is presumed to be an organization to clean up the remaining human and material resources of the National Defense Corps Officer Academy. However, unlike before, the officers who graduated and commissioned the academy followed the Army's officer hierarchy, although they were a reserve. The Reserve Officer Academy produced about 4,500 officers during its six-month until disbandment. Some of them were turned into active-duty officers and have been deployed to the front and rear mopping up and counterterror echelon. And many of them have become the link of the ROKA and U.N. military alliance, with the deployment of a number of senior members of the Korean Service Corps. In addition, they played a role in ensuring the robustness of the labor force to support the U.N. military's defense. But memories of them have been forgotten and excluded from the study of Military History which was implemented from national history research institutions. Therefore, in this paper, I attempt to restore the nature of the Reserve Officer Academy and its military historical character by compiling the statements of the veterans along with the extremely scarce literature historical materials.
