이 논문의 목적은 한국 EFL학습자의 다양한 어휘학습 전략을 연구하기 위한 것이다. 6개 대학의 대학생 227명을 대상으로 그들의 연어능력에 따라 상ㆍ중ㆍ하 세 집단으로 분류를 하였다. 두 가지 연구 문제에 대한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우리나라 대학생들이 주로 사용하는 어휘학습 전략은 영어 사전 사용과 문맥에서 의미 추론이었으며,가장 적게 사용하는 전략으로는 교사에게 의미 묻기, 영영 사전 사용으로 나타났다. 둘째, 우리나라 대학생들의 연어 능력에 따른 어휘학습 전략의 차이는 상위 수준 학생들이 하위 수준 학생들보다 다양한전략들을 더욱 자주 사용하며, 특히 품사 분석, 영영사전 사용 전략이두드러졌다. 이 논문에 대한 교육적인 함의는 어휘학습 전략의 지도가학습자의 어휘 지식을 증가시키는데 있어 필수적이며, 학습자의 영어능숙도에 맞는 다양한 효율적인 어휘학습 전략이 제공되어져야 한다는 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean EFL learners’ use of various vocabulary learning strategies. Participants in the study were 227 college students from 6 different universities and were divided into three different groups based on their collocational competence. The results are as follows: The most commonly used strategies were the use of a bilingual dictionary and guessing from textual contexts. On the other hand, the least used strategies were asking a teacher for the meaning, the use of a monolingual dictionary and communicating with a native speaker. Upper level students used more strategies frequently than lower level ones. Pedagogical implications of this study are that vocabulary learning strategy instruction is important to increase learners‘ vocabulary knowledge and should be taught in accordance with their proficiency level, too.
