Abstract

This article analyzes the portrayals of the Buddhist nuns in Yi Injik and Kim Kyoje’s Mt. Ch’iak in terms of the captivity narrative in American literature. I first discuss major characteristics of the captivity narrative genre and their applicability to Mt. Ch’iak. A binary structure in race, religion, and culture, the Indian’s contradictory images as the white man’s “Other,” and an ideological link between this genre and early American history are scrutinized. The second section of my article examines the ways in which Mt. Ch’iak, Seoul, and Wŏnju are depicted as symbolic spaces of savagery, civilization, and frontier, respectively. Oddly, the nuns are placed in the deep mountains, together with beasts and brutes, raising various interpretive issues. In the third part, I investigate the narrative functions of Suwŏltang and Haewŏram as Madam Yi’s compassionate but not so wise rescuer and an accomplice in a brutal revenge drama, respectively. The authors raise a critical voice on the Buddhist monastic community through two lascivious monks and a quack shaman guised as a nun. Lastly, Madam Yi’s ordeal in Mt. Ch’iak, transformation into a nun, and ultimate return to society are analyzed in terms of Victor Turner’s theory of liminality, which helps probe into the sociocultural significance of the captivity narrative. The heroine’s rite of passage symbolizes Korea’s initiation into modernity. My conclusion suggests that the authors’ social Darwinist project for Korea as a modern nation state has no room for Buddhist nuns who resist wifehood and motherhood.
